If you take your blog seriously, and if you someday think it may become a source of income, then you should take the time to create a business plan.
You’ll have to think back about why you started your blog and what your intentions were, so it might take some time to get your thoughts together on this step. Or, if you’re still grappling with jumping into the book blog world, this is a great way to get your mind wrapped around the idea.
The more thorough you are, the more you can guide yourself in the direction you want your blog to go. Here is a list of questions and things you should consider to create your blogging business plan.
1. Why do you want to blog?
You should have a solid reason as to why you want to blog before you jump into blogging. If you know why you want to blog, then you are more likely to stick with it, and to feel like you are achieving something. It may be something simple, like you just need a creative outlet, or want to share certain experiences- it doesn’t need to be a giant scheme. However, if you do have big plans, outline them. How are you going to achieve your goals with your blog? Write it all down.
2. What is your niche? What makes your book blog unique from others?
Technically speaking, book blogging is it’s own niche of the blogiverse, but all those book bloggers are unique. Think about what makes you unique, and the special knowledge you can offer readers. This is what is going to make people recognize you in your writing style, the way you present your blog, and how you can understand you brand.
3. What is the blog tagline, and what does it tell others about my blog?
Your blog tagline should be a simple phrase, keywords, or statement that tells readers, at a glance, what your blog is all about. If you need examples, check out some of your favorite book bloggers, and look below their blog name header. Also, it may help to come up with a list of adjectives that describe your blog (or your ideal) and then work off that list.
4. What should you write about? How does it draw other readers in?
This is my favorite part of blogging- the endless amount of things you can discuss! However, ideally here, you want to brainstorm what types of content would fit into your niche (book blogging and whatever makes your blog unique), and eliminate ideas that don’t exactly fit.
For example, say you’re planning a blog about travel and books you read about travel or while traveling, etc. You might not want to post about your grandma’s 90th birthday party and the amazing decorations… you get me? Make things relevant and cohesive so that your readers know what to expect when they visit your blog.
5. Of that content above, what will create value to the readers?
As book bloggers, you know readers are searching for information on certain books- if they are good or bad, if you mention a certain character they need help understanding, etc. That content is valuable to readers because it helps them find the answers they are seeking. If you can consistently answer what they are questioning, you build trust- and a following. So when you think about your content, think like the reader- what information would they be looking for? Is reading the post a helpful, positive, honest experience?
6. What is the ideal reader profile (what kind of audience are you trying to cater to)?
The ideal reader profile is a great tool to have in order to understand your audience and help build content for them. If you’re a Young Adult reader and blogging about those books, you want to attract fellow young adult readers, right? Brainstorm about what kind of audience you want to attract to your blog, and write your content with them in mind.
7. What marketing strategies are you going to implement to promote your blog?
There are so many free ways to promote your blog, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed, so brainstorm what services would work best for you. There’s many social media apps and websites that focus on promoting books (a post on that coming soon!) There’s also cross-promotion with other bloggers, giveaways, word of mouth networking, and handout materials (like business cards or in our world, bookmarks!
Of course, there is also paid opportunities, in which you pay for a service to promote your blog. No matter how you go about it though, it’s best to know how you want to go about it, where to focus your energy, and what kind of budget you are working with.
8. Do you plan to monetize your blog, and if so, how?
This is something I wish I had thought of before I began blogging, but it honestly wasn’t something I thought I’d consider. However, as I started to put more and more work into this blog, as well as money, I realized how great it would be to get a little passive income to help subsidize the costs to run the blog.
So, you should create a budget to show the expected income and expenses of your blog to help you look at the whole picture as a business. You are investing money into it- what are you going to get out of it? Especially if you plan to pay for advertising, or intend to utilize a host-site (or even upgrade through WordPress.com).
Then, if you decide to monetize it, think about how you are going to do so. Remember to keep advertising and affiliated marketing relevant to your blog niche, and make sure the expense is worth it.
